Shopping Square "Meydan" in Istanbul

Unusual architecture combined with innovative technology: these are the hallmarks of the "Meydan" shopping square, which METRO PROPERTIES opened in August 2007 in Istanbul and successfully sold in June 2013. With natural roof meadows, flowing transitions of the building structures and a spacious plaza, the star architects from the London firm of Foreign Office Architects (FOA) have created a modern marketplace - in Turkish "Meydan" - for the suburb of Ümraniye.

Tenant mix for the young target group

The shopping square combines shopping and leisure activities: over an area of 70,000 square metres there are around 50 shops, a food court with restaurants and cafes and a multiplex cinema. In addition to the METRO retail brand Real with 9,500 square metres, other anchor tenants are trendy brands such as Adidas, Nike and Mango. In addition in September 2007, the first Media Markt in Turkey opened its doors in Meydan Shopping Square.

Sustainable energy concept

From the ecological perspective, Meydan is a role model: One of the largest geothermal systems in Europe provides the air conditioning. The heating and cooling are provided to a large extent by means of geothermal energy.

Through the use of renewable energies, METRO PROPERTIES makes a significant contribution towards climate and environmental protection. Further information is available from www.meydan.metro-mam.de.

Outstanding Architecture and Technology

The Meydan Shopping Square has already received several international awards since its opening in August 2007.

For example, the jury of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) awarded the Meydan Shopping Square the world's most prestigious prize in the sector, the "Best of the Best Award 2010" as the most sustainable shopping center in the world.
As part of the European Shopping Centre Awards 2009, the ICSC has already awarded the Meydan Shopping Square the special "Resource" prize.

For the "Prime Property Award 2008", Meydan was the winner among 90 submitted projects from 18 European countries. Meydan was recognised as a real estate project which stands out due to its "remarkable ecological quality", combining this in an "exemplary manner" with economic and socio-cultural sustainability.

For its exceptional innovative architecture, the Meydan Shopping Square was honoured in May 2008, by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Europe with the "Award for Excellence".

In Turkey, the Shopping Square was immediately awarded two prizes, the "European Business Awards for the Environment" of the EU Commission and the ArkiPARC 2008 Property Award.
